Independent Order of Odd Fellows

The story behind our story.

“Friendship, Love, and Truth.”

That is the motto that drives the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), and it’s the philosophy that makes The Meadows of Napa Valley such a special place.

The IOOF has a long history (two centuries!) of serving others, and today the nonprofit Odd Fellows Home of California is the owner of two incredible Life Plan communities in the Bay Area—The Meadows of Napa Valley and Saratoga Retirement Community. These communities fulfill the Order’s mission to serve others and we are honored to care for those in their later years.

In 1893, the first Odd Fellows Home was established in Thermalito, California. In 1912, the Odd Fellows moved their home from Thermalito to Saratoga, California, and for 100 years, members of the Odd Fellows, their widows, and Rebekahs have resided there.

In 1992, the Odd Fellows of California purchased The Meadows of Napa Valley. For some time, the two retirement communities were managed by two separate nonprofit organizations—Odd Fellows Home of California and Odd Fellows Housing of Napa.

The two organizations eventually merged into what is today the Odd Fellows Home of California, a public benefit nonprofit corporation that owns and operates The Meadows of Napa Valley and Saratoga Retirement Community.

Odd Fellows and Rebekah Member resident testimonials.

Both The Meadows and Saratoga provide a luxurious retirement experience that seamlessly blends together the values of friendship, love, and truth with community fellowship. The chance to live among other like-minded Members, and the endless opportunities to continue to serve others, make both communities a place where Members will feel at home.

Odd Fellow & Rebekah Member Resident Norman Prigge

“I had no intention of coming to a retirement residence, as a lifestyle, much less to The Meadows. When I first visited here, I had never been to Napa in my life. I simply came to visit a friend and thought, ‘MyGod this place is terrific,’ and I knew it was the place for me. There are so many organizations here that meet the needs and interests of just about everyone. For me, it wasn’t just about choosing a retirement home, it was about choosing a retirement home where I can live WELL in my senior years.”

Rebekah Member Resident Patricia Player

“Odd Fellow and Rebekah members are working-class people for the most part. I rent because I could never afford to pay an entrance fee as a retired teacher with a limited income. The financial benefit I receive helps to pay part of my monthly rent, and if I didn’t have it, I wouldn’t be able to live here. I never dreamed I would have a discount. It’s truly wonderful.”

Odd Fellow Member Resident Tom Collette

“We have a lodge here; if you want friendship, to meet new people, and you enjoy fellowship, this is the place to be. It’s nice to live in a community of like-minded people, and we can more Odd Fellows and Rebekahs to move in. Also, the financial benefits that you get for years of membership are huge.”

Odd Fellow & Rebekah Member Residents Richard & Dorothy Brouse

“Financially, if you have a minimum of 10 years in the Order, moving here is very worthwhile. Say you’re a 50-year member; basically the base rent of your apartment is paid for by The Odd Fellows. Also, the community here is very friendly, as well as the staff. They quickly learn your name. When we go to the dining room, they know what we want to drink, and they often bring it as we sit down. Of you remember that TV show Cheers, ‘where everybody knows your name,’ that’s here. Everyone knows your name!”

Odd Fellow Member Resident Jerry Worth

“Members move in because they see that there’s friendship here. If they want to continue to live the life of an Odd Fellow or Rebekah, we have a lodge here, so they can continue that. They will find that our activities are very good, the people are very friendly, and the dining is first-class. Also if they retire here, they come in at a very competitive price. As a 75-year member myself, I live here free, and I never thought that would happen.”
